Google Ads vs SEO for local businesses is rarely an either-or decision. Ads put you at the top of the results soon after a campaign is approved, and you pay for every click; SEO earns visibility in the organic results and the map pack over time, with no fee per click but real work behind it.
This guide covers what clicks actually cost for local services, what SEO costs and how long it takes, when each one makes sense, and how to measure the calls and forms that matter. Figures are quoted from published benchmarks, with their limits explained.
How the two channels differ
Google Ads is an auction. You choose keywords and areas, set a budget and pay when someone clicks. Once your ads pass Google's review, a campaign can bring traffic almost straight away. When you stop paying, the ads stop.
SEO covers your website and your Google Business Profile: service pages, technical health, reviews and local relevance. There is no shortcut into the local results. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.
The two also appear in different places. Ads sit above or below the organic results and can carry call buttons and location details; the map pack shows businesses from Google Business Profile; and the organic listings link to pages on websites. A single local search can show all three, which is why many businesses end up using more than one.
What clicks cost for local services
The largest public benchmark is US-based and in dollars. According to LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks, the average cost per click across industries is $5.42, with Attorneys & Legal Services at $9.87, Home & Home Improvement at $8.33, Dentists & Dental Services at $8.00, Personal Services at $7.17 and Automotive Repair at $4.35. The average cost per lead is $66.69.
UK estimates vary more. Whitehat SEO's 2026 UK guide, which draws on WordStream and other 2025 benchmarks, gives £6 to £9+ per click for legal services, £5.50 to £7.85 for home improvement and £4 to £5.50 for healthcare and dental. Whito's UK figures, based on Q1 2026 data, are lower: an average of £3.20 for home services, £2.80 for healthcare and dental, and £8.25 for legal services. Whito itself notes that no primary UK-wide survey of Google Ads click costs exists.
The honest conclusion is to treat these as orientation, then check your own keywords and area in Google Keyword Planner. As a worked example rather than a benchmark: if your clicks cost £4 and one visitor in ten makes an enquiry, each enquiry costs about £40, before you count how many become paying jobs.
What SEO costs and how long it takes
Local SEO is usually sold as a monthly retainer or a one-off setup. According to Whito's 2026 UK SEO pricing data, a local service business such as a plumber, dentist or salon typically pays £300 to £800 a month, and a one-off local SEO setup costs £250 to £800. These are indicative figures, so ask exactly what work is included each month.
Timelines depend on your starting point: a new domain with no reviews starts further back than an established business with a decent site. Ask any SEO provider what results they expect and in what timeframe, be wary of anyone who guarantees a number one position, and judge progress on enquiries rather than rankings alone. In practice, think in months, not days.
When Google Ads makes sense
Ads work best when demand already exists and people need someone now: an emergency plumber, a locksmith, a boiler repair, a solicitor for an urgent matter. They are also useful for a new business with no organic visibility yet, for testing a new service or area before investing in content, and for seasonal peaks.
They only pay off if the basics are in place: a landing page that matches the search, a clear offer, and someone who answers the phone. Paying for clicks that land on a slow, generic homepage, or calls that ring out to voicemail, is the most common way small budgets are wasted.
When SEO makes sense
SEO suits services people research before buying, such as a kitchen fit, dental implants or conveyancing, and businesses that want a steady flow of enquiries without paying for each visit. A good service page and a well-kept Google Business Profile keep working after the effort has been made.
In practice most local businesses benefit from both: ads for urgent, high-value searches and for testing, SEO to build visibility and trust that reduces your reliance on paid clicks over time. The split depends on your budget, your competition and how quickly you need work.
Local SEO work is concrete: a page for each main service, clear information about the areas you cover, a fast mobile site, a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of genuine reviews. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is visible to customers as well as to Google.
Measuring calls and forms properly
Clicks and impressions are not results. Decide what counts as a lead, usually a form submission, a phone call or a WhatsApp message, and track each one as a conversion in Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager.
For calls, Google Ads can measure calls from your ads, clicks on your phone number on the mobile site, and calls to a Google forwarding number shown on your website, which count as conversions when they last longer than a minimum length you set. If you track sales in another system, Google also supports importing call conversions.
Tag your Google Business Profile website link with UTM parameters so map traffic is separated from other sources, and keep a simple log of which leads became paying customers. In the UK and Ireland, analytics and advertising tags also need a proper cookie consent set-up, which affects what you can measure.
